Spottswoode 06 Cabernet California Red Price: $134.99 Read More »

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, which has taken on much greater complexity and intensity since I tasted it right after bottling, is largely all Cabernet Sauvignon with just a small amount of Cabernet Franc in the blend. The owner’s daughter, Beth Novak, and her assistants, Rosemary Cakebread and Jennifer Williams, made an intelligent decision in bottling this wine later than normal to resolve some of the tannin issues, and they have certainly succeeded. This wine, which I believe will evolve for 25 or more years, has a gorgeous nose of violets, black currants, licorice, camphor, and a hint of graphite. Layered, rich, and full-bodied, the wine has an opaque purple color as well as wonderful purity and balance. It could be considered the wine world’s version of haute couture at a top address in Paris. It’s a beauty, perfectly balanced and as flawless and seamless as a 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa can be. Drink it over the next 25 years.  RP 95pts

I don’t know whether it’s me, the vintage character, or whether Randy Dunn and his son have intentionally softened their wines, but these 2004s are more opulent and up-front than previous renditions. Yet, they lack neither concentration nor richness. Those of us who have been cellaring Dunn’s wines for twenty years, waiting for them to reach maturity should be thrilled by this new development. The Howell Mountain is denser and richer with blacker fruits as well as more body. Both are full-bodied, powerful Cabernets very much in keeping with his style. However, the tannins are softer and the wines reveal surprisingly developed aromatics. The 2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon should last for 20-25 years. It is a brilliant achievement  RP 94+.

Heitz Martha's Vnyd Napa 05 California Red Price: $164.99
Roy Estate Red Napa 06 California Red Price: $119.99 Read More »

Roy’s biggest production wine (approximately 1,500 cases) is their proprietary blend. The 2006 Proprietary Red is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. It possesses elegant, roasted herb, chocolate, espresso, and black currant aromas, delicious fruit, and a long, muscular, concentrated personality. Obviously built for the long haul, it is approachable, but should hit its peak in 7-8 years, and last for 20-25.

This 17-acre Soda Canyon site originally planted by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer has tight 3 x 6 spacing, and produces two wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon and an estate proprietary blend. Proprietors Shirley and Charles Roy have demonstrated courage as well as passion in attempting to craft some of the finest wines to emerge from this area of Napa. Production is slightly over 2,500 cases in an abundant vintage, and winemaker Philippe Melka brings a French savoir-faire to Napa Valley’s gorgeous fruit  RP 94.

Beychevelle St Julien 06 France Price: $95.99 Read More »

A property that seems to be awakening, this St.-Julien leans toward more of a Margaux style. The attractive earthy, floral, red currant, and raspberry notes are impressively intense and complex in the aromatics. This dark ruby/purple-tinged wine displays elegance, finesse, and a beautiful mouthfeel in a restrained, moderately intense, but still classic style with sweet tannins. Tobacco, cedar, earth, and red and black fruits are prominent in both the aromas and the flavors. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years  RP 90.

Ch L'Arrosee St Emilion 04 France Price: $99.99 Read More »

This lighter-styled, but complex, finely tuned effort reveals notes of cedar, dried herbs, spice, smoke, sweet cherry and currant fruit, and subtle new oak. With medium body as well as broad, savory, silky, lush flavors, it will drink well for 12-14 years. This is an impressive vineyard that is on an upsurge in quality  RP 90.

Ch Malartic-Lagraviere Pessac-Leognan 06 France Price: $79.99 Read More »

Proprietor Alexandre Bonnie has produced brilliant white and red wines at this estate's NASA space age-looking winemaking facility. I remember these wines from the early days of The Wine Advocate, and they were undrinkable swill. That is certainly not the case today. This is classic Pessac-Leognan with leafy tobacco, smoky red and black currant, forest floor, cedar, and graphite notes. It is a medium-bodied wine of impeccable purity, texture, and balance. Enjoy it over the next 15 years  RP 90.

Ch Leoville Barton St Julien 04 France Price: $159.99 Read More »

This is an impressively endowed vin de garde that should age effortlessly for 20-30 years. How Anthony Barton continues to fashion uncompromisingly primordial Bordeaux that are always among the biggest and densest of all the St.-Juliens is beyond me, but he does it year in and year out. Moreover, when it’s time to set the price, he appears to have the consumer foremost in his mind. The 2004 is a classic Leoville-Barton meant for long aging. Concentrated, with loads of smoke, creme de cassis, forest floor, and earthy notes emerge from this impressive, but oh, so backward wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+  RP 92+

Ch Lagrange St Julien 06 France Price: $89.99 Read More »

A very strong effort from Lagrange in 2006, this estate’s tendency for including a nearly overwhelming oak component in its wines has been tamed in this cuvee, resulting in a better-balanced, potentially complex offering. A deep opaque purple color is followed by aromas of espresso roast, subtle pain grille, black currants, and cigar box. Full-bodied and surprisingly powerful for a 2006, with outstanding purity, texture, and depth, patience will be required for this beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2027. RP 91.

Ch Lafon Rochet St Estephe 05 France Price: $89.99 Read More »

At present, this structured, backward 2005 is dominated by the vintage’s substantial tannins. It exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, a reticent but promising bouquet of sweet black fruits intermixed with weedy tobacco, licorice, and leather characteristics. Medium-bodied and powerful, with excruciating tannin, but promising potential, patience is most definitely required. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030-- RP 90 pts

Pio Cesare Barolo 2005 Italy Price: $64.99
Pio Cesare Barbaresco '05 Italy Price: $64.99 Read More »

The 2005 Barbaresco is a very pretty wine that combines elements of flowers, sweet spices and dried cherries in a firm, structured style. Although the Barbaresco needs a few years to come together, it doesn’t look destined to be a long-term ager as the fruit lacks the depth and concentration that might support extended cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020
